Frequently Asked Questions...
When can I travel for free, and when can I buy a discounted concessionary single ticket?
In line with the English National Concessionary Travel Scheme, free travel is available from 9.30am to 11pm weekdays and all day at weekends and on Bank Holidays.
We offer discounted concessionary single tickets from 8.30am and 9.30am every weekday.
Unfortunately, if you need to travel before 8.30am you will need to buy one of our range of tickets at the full adult fare.
Which bus routes can I travel for free or buy a discounted single ticket on?
All bus routes operated by First Eastern Counties across Norfolk, Suffolk and the full length of our excel service between Norwich, Kings Lynn & Peterborough.
In my rush to get the bus, I've left my pass at home. Can I still travel for free or buy a discounted ticket?
You will need to be able to show a valid, in date, clearly readable English National Concessionary Bus Pass to either travel for free or buy a discounted single. If you can't, then unfortunately you'll have to pay the full normal adult fare.
My bus leaves at 9.29am...can I travel for free?
Unfortunately under the terms of the English National Concessionary Travel Scheme, only bus journeys starting after 9.30am on weekdays are free. Our ticket machines are programmed to automatically only accept cards when they are valid so please don't moan at the driver if it's before 9.30am and yours isn't accepted when you put it on the reader.
My bus leaves at 8.29...can I still buy a ticket at the discount price on this bus?
Because many of our buses are already extremely busy before 8.29am, we can only offer the special discounted single fare to passengers boarding after 8.30am. What's more, our ticket machines will not allow drivers to sell these tickets outside of 8.30am and 9.30am.
My pass is out of date! Can I still travel for free or buy a discounted single ticket?
Unfortunately you must be able to present a valid, in date, English National Concessionary Bus Pass to either travel for free or buy a discounted single. If you can't, then unfortunately you'll have to pay the full normal adult fare.
What happens when I get on the bus?
If it is after 9.30am you will need to place your pass firmly on the reader that is on the top of our ticket machines. Assuming the pass is in date and not damaged the machine should show you a green light and issue you a ticket. If not, the driver may ask you to present the pass again, or to allow him to see it to check that it is valid.
If it is between 8.30am and 9.30am, you can buy a discounted single ticket from the driver. You will need to show your pass to prove that you're entitled to take advantage of the special fare.
Do your drivers give change?
Our drivers do carry a small amount of change, but this is often used up very early in the day, so please try to have the correct money or a good selection of coins ready when you board the bus.
I've only got a £20 note and the driver has run out of change. Can I travel for free?
Unfortunately, whilst our driver do carry a small amount of change, it is a passengers responsibility to be able to pay a bus fare. Therefore, please have the correct money or a good selection of coins, ready when you board the bus.
Can I buy tickets other than singles at Young Person fares with my pass?
Only single tickets are available at the dicounted (Young Person) price. If you wish to buy a weekly, 10-trip or any other type of ticket other than a single then you'll need to pay full normal adult fare.
