FIRST WEST OF ENGLAND TO EXPAND BUS SERVICES AND

IMPROVE PUNCTUALITY OF NEW TIMETABLES

Bus operator First West of England has today announced a significant increase in the number of buses operating in the region from Sunday 2nd April.

The changes will add over 3,000 hours of bus journeys to routes across the region every week. The operator’s buses will travel over a million and a half extra miles every year to give people more opportunities to travel sustainably. As part of this, First West of England will be reinstating over 1,600 hours of buses in Bristol every week, following the temporary suspension of some journeys in November due to driver shortages.

The increased frequencies and punctuality improvements represent a significant investment from First West of England in service improvements. In addition, the West of England Combined Authority and North Somerset Council are contributing extensive Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) funding to enhance a number of key routes across the region.  The combined package includes additional buses into Bristol City Centre from Kingswood, Downend, Staple Hill, Whitchurch and Keynsham; Thornbury and Bristol City Centre; Twerton and Bath City Centre; and between Midsomer Norton and Bath City Centre.

Despite the improvements to many services, passenger numbers are still down by around 20% on pre-pandemic levels and although many services are showing good growth, a very small number have shown no signs of attracting sufficient users to cover their costs. As a result, services 23, 47 and 91 will no longer operate from Sunday 2nd April.

Doug Claringbold, Managing Director of First West of England, said: “These new timetables will significantly increase the service we offer our customers and I’m confident that our investment in new technology will also continue to improve punctuality. We will also be reinstating journeys in Bristol that we had to temporarily suspend last year, as we are starting to see the effect of our major driver recruitment and retention campaign.

We’re delighted that the West of England Combined Authority and North Somerset Council's successful BSIP award means significant investment in a number of important routes, which together with our own investment in our commercial network will bring improvements for many customers.

Bath, North East Somerset and Somerset Mendip area

Most services will have new timetables to improve punctuality and customers are advised to check the new times before travelling.

Service 1 Bath City Centre – Southdown – the frequency of the service will increase to around every 12-15 minutes on Monday to Saturdays and every 20-25 minutes on Sundays.

Service 2 Bath City Centre – Mulberry Park – revised timetable. Very early morning journeys will start from Rossiter Road rather than Hadley Arms/Bus Station.

Service 3 Bath City Centre – Bathford – revised timetable. An additional journey will run on school-day afternoons from Hayesfield School to Bathford, to match the existing morning journey to the school.

Services 4/4a/4b Weston – Bath City Centre – Foxhill/Odd Down – revised timetable. All services will now follow the same route around Weston, serving Upper Weston in addition to Eastfield Avenue. Evening service 4b will operate via Frome Road past Sainsbury’s rather than Wellsway and Midford Road to improve journey times. On Sundays, Service 4a will now operate the full route. All buses towards Foxhill and Odd Down will now depart from Bay 9 at Bath Bus Station, rather than the stop at Broad Quay, to give customers a better waiting environment.

Service 5 Bath City Centre – Whiteway – revised timetable with frequency improvements. Additional morning journeys have been added and the service will now run up to every 12 minutes on Monday-Saturday and every 14 minutes on Sunday.

Service 8 Bath City Centre – Kingsway – the service will continue to operate on a 45 minute frequency, Monday-Saturday, but the Sunday service will be withdrawn following the West of England Combined Authority’s decision not to award a contract for Sunday operation of this service.

Service 19 Bath – Kingswood – Bristol Parkway Station – Westgate Buildings stop will now be a timing point bus stop (that appears on the timetable) to improve the performance of the Real Time Information tracking.

Service 39/X39 Bath – Bristol – revised timetable. The frequency of this service will be increased, with buses on Monday-Friday running up to every 15 minutes all through the daytime, and with more buses at weekends too.

Service 172 Bath – Midsomer Norton – Bristol – as a result of funding provided following the successful award to the West of England Combined Authority and North Somerset Council Bus Service Improvement Plan, a revised Service 172 will operate. There will be no changes to the route between Bath and Midsomer Norton. From Midsomer Norton, the route will be extended into Paulton and on to Bristol along the route of Service 376, replacing Service 379. The 172 will operate half-hourly during the day and alongside the 376 will provide a combined 15-minute frequency along the A39 from White Cross via Whitchurch into Bristol on Monday-Saturday. When combined with services 173, 174 and the new service 522 (see below), this will also give customers a combined 12-minute frequency between Midsomer Norton and Bath, Monday-Saturday

Service 172 will operate hourly into the evening, with early morning and late evening journeys continuing to operate to and from Wells. This service will no longer serve Midsomer Norton Tesco.

In Bristol City Centre, the route will operate between Bristol Temple Meads and Bristol Bus Station via Victoria Street and Bristol Bridge, giving passengers travelling between the City Centre and the Wells Road common bus stops with services 2, 2a and 92. Stops served towards the City Centre will be: Temple Meads Station (T2), Victoria Street (R6), Bristol Bridge (R8), Wine Street (B17) and Bristol Bus Station. Stops served towards Midsomer Norton and Bath will be: Bristol Bus Station, Wine Street (B18), Bristol Bridge (R9), Victoria Street (R7) and Temple Meads Station (T1).

Services 173 & 174 Wells – Bath – revised timetables. Some early morning journeys on Service 173 will run between Wells and Midsomer Norton only, linking with Service 172 for journeys to Bristol.

Service 376 Street – Wells – Bristol – will continue to operate half hourly Monday-Saturday and hourly on Sunday. When combined with the revised service 172, which will be extended to and from Bristol from Midsomer Norton and follow the 376 route into Bristol, this will give customers a combined 15-minute frequency from White Cross via Whitchurch into Bristol, Monday-Saturday. The route will change between Bristol Temple Meads and Bristol Bus Station to operate via Victoria Street and Bristol Bridge, giving 376 users stops closer to The Centre and passengers travelling between the City Centre and the Wells Road common bus stops with services 2, 2a and 92. Stops served towards the City Centre will be: Temple Meads Station (T2), Victoria Street (R6), Bristol Bridge (R8), Wine Street (B17) and Bristol Bus Station. Stops served towards Street will be: Bristol Bus Station, Wine Street (B18), Bristol Bridge (R9), Victoria Street (R7) and Temple Meads Station (T1).

Service 379 Bath – Midsomer Norton – Bristol – this service will be replaced by a revised Service 172, please see above for details.

Service 522 Bath – Midsomer Norton – Keynsham – Bristol – as a result of funding provided following the successful award to the West of England Combined Authority and North Somerset Council Bus Service Improvement Plan, new service 522 will be introduced. This will operate hourly, Monday-Sunday, between Bristol Bus Station and Bath Bus Station via Brislington, Keynsham, Marksbury, Farmborough, Timsbury, High Littleton, Paulton, Midsomer Norton, Radstock and Peasdown St. John. This will give customers a 12-minute service between Midsomer Norton and Bath when combined with routes 172, 173 and 174. There will be additional journeys running between Bristol and Keynsham town centre, which when combined with service 349, will give a 15-minute frequency between Bristol and Keynsham, doubling the number of daytime buses compared to now.

For the avoidance of doubt, this service will operate through to Bristol and Bath Bus Stations, and not terminate at Brislington and/or Odd Down Park & Ride sites as erroneously reported in some places. The route between Paulton and Radstock is via Paulton High Street, Winterfield Road, Salisbury Terrace, Phillis Hill, Thicket Mead Roundabout, Northmead Road, Paulton Road, Redfield Road, Midsomer Norton High Street (serving Town Hall stops), Silver Street, Charlton Road, Green Park Road, Fosseway and Wells Road.

Service D1 Bath – Warminster – revised timetable. Weekend journeys have been amended to better match Bath Rugby matchday finish times.

Services D2 & D2x Bath – Frome – a new service, number D2x, will be launched. This will provide a faster link between Bath and Frome, with the service running direct via the A36 through Claverton and using double decker buses in order to increase the number of seats. Service D2x will operate hourly during peak hours on Monday-Fridays, and two-hourly all-day Saturday. Service D2 will continue to operate the current route via Midford with revised times and will operate broadly the same hours of operation as now. D2x journeys on a Saturday have been timed to match Bath Rugby match times.

There are no changes to Bath Park and Ride services or Service U5.

Bristol and South Gloucestershire area

Most services in Bristol will have extensively revised timetables to improve punctuality, and following the temporary cancellations in November, journeys will be restored on all routes (1, 2, 2a, 3, 4, 8, 24, 42, 43, 48, 48a, 49, 74, 75, 76, 90 and 92). Where time has been added to timetables to improve punctuality, you may find that buses need to pause at some bus stops on quieter days to help keep to the timetable.

Customers are advised to check the new timetables before travel.

Services 1, 2 & 2a Cribbs Causeway – Bristol City Centre – Broomhill/Stockwood – journeys reinstated and revised timetables across the routes to improve punctuality.

At Cribbs Causeway Bus Station, Services 1 and 2 will now use bus stop H, to provide a common bus stop for buses running via Henbury. Service 76 evening journeys will also serve stop H and services 3 and 4 will continue to use adjacent stop G.

For those customers travelling between Bristol City Centre and the Wells Road on Services 2, 2a or 92 please note that Services 376 and the new 172 will now serve stops at Wine Street, Bristol Bridge and Victoria Street on their way in and out of the City Centre, to provide common bus stops for these services.

Services 3 & 4 Bristol City Centre – Henbury/Cribbs Causeway – journeys reinstated and revised timetables to improve punctuality. Two afternoon school journeys on the 4 have been extended to Cribbs Causeway rather than terminating at Henbury.

Services 6 & 7 Bristol City Centre – Kingswood/Staple Hill more buses will run in the morning peak towards the City Centre, to provide extra capacity. Timetables have been revised to improve punctuality.

Service 17 Bristol or Southmead Hospital – Kingwood/Keynsham revised timetable to improve punctuality. Fewer journeys will operate between Southmead Hospital and Bristol City Centre via Gloucester Road than at present. On Saturday, buses will no longer operate around the Keynsham Loop, the same as on Monday-Friday. Sunday buses will continue to operate around the loop. Two late evening journeys between Southmead Hospital and Kingswood will be withdrawn due to the Combined Authority contract for these journeys ending.

Services 23 & 24 Ashton Vale – Bristol City Centre – Southmead Hospital service 24 will have a revised timetable to improve punctuality across the route, and all journeys reinstated. Due to low passenger numbers, Service 23 will be withdrawn. Frequent alternative routes for the majority of customers are available nearby with Service 24 and from the Ashton Vale stop on Service m2, which will be increased to run every 15 minutes (see below).

Service 35 Kingswood – Marshfield – following a new contract award by the West of England Combined Authority, this service will now be operated by Faresaver Buses. The service will run between Kingswood and Marshfield only. You can view the new timetable on the Current Timetables page on Faresaver's website here.

Service 39/X39 Bristol – Bath – revised timetable. The frequency of this service will be increased, with buses on Monday-Friday running up to every 15 minutes all through the daytime, and with more buses at weekends too. Combined with Service 349 and new Service 522, there will be up to eight buses an hour between Hicks Gate, Brislington and Bristol City Centre.

Services 42 & 43 Bristol City Centre – Cadbury Heath/Cherry Gardens – frequency increased at peak times to provide buses up to every 7-8 minutes between Kingswood and The Centre. Revised timetable to improve punctuality and all journeys reinstated. Some additional Service 43 journeys will terminate at Warmley, Station Road to provide more buses over the Warmley to Kingswood section of the route. These will operate via Tower Road North and turn left into Station Road to terminate facing Bristol ready for the next journey.

Service 47 Bristol City Centre – Emersons Green – Yate – due to low passenger numbers, Service 47 will be withdrawn. Service 48, 48a and 49 provide a nearby alternative for much of the Bristol section of the service. Between Emersons Green and Yate and Brimsham Park, customers will have access to a new Service 525, which will be operated by Stagecoach West under contract to the Combined Authority and continue to serve Pucklechurch. A new Service 25 will be operated by Transpora covering the City Road, Ashley Road, St Werburgh's and Eastgate section of route. The new timetable can be viewed here.

Services 48, 48a and 49 Bristol City Centre – Emersons Green or UWE Frenchay Campus – buses will be increased on weekdays to run between the City Centre and Downend up to every 15 minutes on the 48, and up to every 15 minutes to Staple Hill on the 49. Combined, this will provide buses up to every 7/8 minutes between the City Centre and Fishponds. Alternate buses on each route will continue to Emersons Green Sainsbury’s.

Those buses on Service 48 terminating at Downend The Horseshoe will run via Westerleigh Road and Cleeve Road to terminate at the bus stop facing Bristol ready for the next journey. Similarly, buses on the 49 terminating at Staple Hill will run via the south side of Page Park to reach the Hill House Road stop. Overnight journeys on the 48 will also be changed to terminate at Downend, The Horseshoe. Service 49 will no longer operate between Emersons Green and Lyde Green due to very low usage. Service m3 will continue to link Emersons Green with Lyde Green, with a new stop available in Lyde Green (please see below).

Service 48a will operate every 30 minutes for the summer period and provide additional buses over the City Centre to Fishponds section of route. Evening services have been added to the 48a to serve Blackberry Hill Hospital and Frenchay Park Road following customer requests.

Service 70 Bristol Temple Meads – Bristol City Centre – UWE Frenchay Campus – overnight journeys will extend to serve The Centre, rather that terminating at and starting from Rupert Street. There will be a combined daytime frequency of around every 10 minutes between UWE Frenchay, Filton Avenue and The Centre across services 70 and 74.

Service 73 Bristol Temple Meads – Bristol City Centre – Bristol Parkway – Bradley Stoke – no change to the timetable (this service had punctuality improvement changes in January). At Bristol Parkway Station, buses towards Bristol City Centre and Temple Meads Station will now use bus stop A rather than bus stop C. Buses towards Bradley Stoke will continue to use bus stop B.

Service 74 Bristol City Centre – UWE Frenchay Campus – the route will change to operate via Filton Avenue rather than Gloucester Road North and as a result of collaboration with the West of England Combined Authority, the service will operate every 20 minutes, Monday-Friday, and every 30 minutes on Saturday. Combined with service 70, there will be a frequency of around every 10 minutes between UWE Frenchay, Filton Avenue and The Centre during the daytime.

Service 74 towards The Centre will additionally serve bus stop B10 on The Haymarket between Stokes Croft and Rupert Street stops.

Services 75 & 76 Hengrove – Bristol City Centre – Henbury/Cribbs Causeway – revised timetables to improve punctuality and journeys restored. Buses will operate up to every 7/8 minutes over the combined section of route. The section of route between Hengrove Park and Hengrove Bus Depot will not operate during the daytime due to low passenger numbers and to improve the overall punctuality of the service. All Service 76 journeys currently terminating at Hartcliffe Symes Avenue will extend to Hengrove Park, doubling daytime journeys to and from the Hospital.

At Cribbs Causeway Bus Station, Service 75 will now use bus stop D and evening and overnight journeys on service 76 will now use bus stop H (along with other services that operate via Henbury).

Services 90, 91 & 92 Bristol City Centre – Hengrove – revised timetables to improve punctuality and journeys restored. The 90 will change to operate a loop from Salcombe Road via Throgmorton Road, Creswicke Road and Airport Road back to Salcombe Road. Buses will serve the Airport Road stop by the new housing development, but no longer operate to and from Hengrove Bus Depot. Customers on Throgmorton Road and Creswicke Road travelling towards the City Centre should catch the bus on the opposite side of the road to now.

Service 91 will be withdrawn due to low passenger numbers. Services m1, 90 and 92 provide nearby alternatives for much of the route. Service 92 will have a revised timetable to improve punctuality with journeys restored. All journeys will now operate to and from Hengrove Park, rather than terminating at Belland Drive. Journeys towards Hengrove Park will continue to serve the bus stop at Belland Drive. Buses towards the City Centre will not serve the Belland Drive stops, instead staying on Whitchurch Lane and serving the nearby Dakota Drive stop.

The 92 will now generally be operated by our citylines blue branded buses.

Service 172 Bristol – Midsomer Norton – Bath – as a result of funding provided following the successful award to the West of England Combined Authority and North Somerset Council Bus Service Improvement Plan, a revised Service 172 will operate. This service will now extend to Bristol replacing Service 379. The 172 will operate half-hourly during the day serving Bristol, Wells Road, Whitchurch, Pensford, White Cross, Paulton, Midsomer Norton, Radstock, Peasdown St. John and Bath. Alongside the 376, this will provide a combined 15-minute frequency along the A39 from Bristol through Whitchurch to White Cross on Monday-Saturday. Full details of the Bath end of the service are covered in the Bath section above. Service 172 will operate hourly into the evening, with early morning and late evening journeys continuing to operate between Bath and Wells. In Bristol City Centre, the route will operate between Bristol Temple Meads and Bristol Bus Station via Victoria Street and Bristol Bridge, giving passengers travelling between the City Centre and the Wells Road common bus stops with services 2, 2a and 92. Stops served towards the City Centre will be: Temple Meads Station (T2), Victoria Street (R6), Bristol Bridge (R8), Wine Street (B17) and Bristol Bus Station. Stops served towards Midsomer Norton and Bath will be: Bristol Bus Station, Wine Street (B18), Bristol Bridge (R9), Victoria Street (R7) and Temple Meads Station (T1).

Service 349 Bristol City Centre – Keynsham – revised timetable to improve punctuality. Buses will continue to operate around every 30 minutes, which when combined with new Service 522 will give an improved 15-minute frequency Monday-Saturday between Bristol and Keynsham Town Centre. The trips that extend to Midsomer Norton will be replaced by Service 522. Please see Service 522 information for the full details. The evening 349 shuttle bus in Keynsham will be withdrawn due to very low usage but evening buses between Bristol and Keynsham will continue to operate on service 39.

On Sundays, buses on the 349 from the City Centre to Keynsham will change number at Keynsham Church and become a number 17 to Southmead Hospital before continuing around the Keynsham Loop.

Service 376 Bristol – Street – Wells – will continue to operate half hourly Monday-Saturday and hourly on Sunday. When combined with the revised service 172, which will be extended to and from Bristol from Midsomer Norton and follow the 376 route into Bristol, this will give customers a combined 15-minute frequency from Bristol via Whitchurch to White Cross, Monday-Saturday. The route will change between Bristol Temple Meads and Bristol Bus Station to operate via Victoria Street and Bristol Bridge, giving 376 users stops closer to The Centre and passengers travelling between the City Centre and the Wells Road common bus stops with services 2, 2a and 92. Stops served towards the City Centre will be: Temple Meads Station (T2), Victoria Street (R6), Bristol Bridge (R8), Wine Street (B17) and Bristol Bus Station. Stops served towards Street will be: Bristol Bus Station, Wine Street (B18), Bristol Bridge (R9), Victoria Street (R7) and Temple Meads Station (T1).

Service 379 Bath – Midsomer Norton – Bristol – this service will be replaced by a revised Service 172, please see above for details.

Brislington & Portway Park and Ride services – these services will be run by Stagecoach West from 2nd April following the award of new contracts by the Combined Authority. We will be issuing refunds on First tickets still valid after 1st April.

Service A1 Bristol – Bristol Airport – overnight journeys on the Bristol Airport Flyer service will now serve Bristol Temple Meads Station meaning all journeys will serve the station. The service will also revert to its normal route via the Queen Square and The Centre stops in both directions, following expected completion of the Bascule Bridge refurbishment works and roadworks.

There are no other changes to the timetable.

Service m1 Hengrove Park – Bristol City Centre – Cribbs Causeway additional early morning journeys will operate between UWE Frenchay and Cribbs Causeway to provide arrival times at Cribbs Causeway before 0600. There will be very minor changes to the rest of timetable at peak times.

Service m2 Long Ashton Park & Ride – Bristol City Centre – as a result of funding provided by the West of England Combined Authority and North Somerset Council’s successful BSIP award, the frequency of Service m2 will increase to every 15 minutes, Monday to Saturday. Extra waiting time will be scheduled into the timetable in the City Centre, to improve timeliness of buses returning to the Park & Ride site during the afternoons.

At Temple Meads Station, bus stop T2 remains out of use due to the fire at the old Grosvenor Hotel. The m2 will stop using stop T8 on Temple Way as a temporary stop, and will instead use stop T3 at the end of Redcliffe Way as a temporary stop. This will mean buses stop closer to the station. Should stop T2 re-open, then buses will resume serving the normal stop.

Services m3 & m3x Bristol City Centre – Emersons Green – new stops will be added at School Square in Lyde Green. Buses will operate via Newlands Lane and Willowherb Road rather than Acorn Drive. This will provide a stop for these services much deeper into Lyde Green than at present. There are no changes to the timetable.

Service T1 Bristol – Thornbury as a result of funding provided by the West of England Combined Authority and North Somerset Council’s successful BSIP award, the frequencies on this service will be improved. During Monday - Friday daytimes, buses will run every 20 minutes. The Monday - Saturday evening service will increase from hourly to half-hourly. The service will also be extended to serve The Centre in Bristol City Centre, rather than the Bus Station.

Service Y1 Bristol – Yate & Chipping Sodbury – the Y1 towards Bristol will call into Yate Park and Ride. Buses will continue to serve all stops as now in Yate, with the Park & Ride bus stop being an additional stop.

Service Y6 Bristol – Cribbs Causeway – Yate & Chipping Sodbury – significantly revised timetable to improve punctuality. The route has been amended at Southmead Hospital to run in both directions via Monks Park Avenue rather than Dorian Way between the Hospital and Gloucester Road.

North Somerset area

Punctuality improvements have been applied to all new timetables in the North Somerset area, and many services will see improved frequencies and more evening buses.

Service X1 Weston-super-Mare – Bristol – the frequency of Service X1 will be improved to every 15 minutes at peak times on Monday-Friday, and every 20-25 mins on Saturday.

Service X4 Portishead – Bristol – the frequency of Service X4 will be improved to up to every 20 minutes, Monday-Friday.

Service X5 Weston-super-Mare – Clevedon – Portishead – the service will now operate via Locking Castle in Weston-super-Mare with a revised timetable. Buses will leave Weston-super-Mare via Locking Road and use Locking Moor Road to reach Locking Castle (Hutton Moor Road towards Weston). Buses will use Summer Lane between Locking Castle and Worle Sainsbury’s. There will also be a new Saturday service.

Services X6 & X7 Clevedon – Bristol – the Monday-Saturday Clevedon-Bristol corridor will benefit from an even half hourly frequency through the combination of the two services. Late evening journeys are restored on Service X7 throughout the week. The X7 will change to operate via Wraxall and no longer serve Backwell, which will be covered by Service X8. This will allow the X7 service to be operated by double deck vehicles to provide additional seats.

In Clevedon, all X6 journeys will now serve the Dial Hill area rather than terminating at Six Ways. Most X7 journeys will now terminate at Six Ways but some Sunday journeys will continue to serve the Dial Hill area.

Service X8 Nailsea – Bristol – this new service will be introduced to provide a Monday-Saturday hourly service from Bristol to Nailsea Link Road via Long Ashton, Backwell and Nailsea and Backwell Station, with journeys timed to match Backwell School start and finish times.

All Long Ashton services – the combination of Services X7, X8 and X9 will provide an improved, up to every 15-minute Monday-Saturday daytime service for Long Ashton, with buses up to every 30 minutes in the evenings.

Weston Coaster 1 Weston-super-Mare – Sand Bay – an improved timetable will be introduced from April, running every 30 minutes, 7 days a week. The route will have minor changes between Weston-super-Mare Interchange and Weston-super-Mare railway station, with buses now serving bus stop J in the Interchange on their way to Sand Bay, rather than serving the Interchange on their way to the railway station. The open top buses will be back for the summer season in the warmer weather.

Service 3 Worle – Weston-super-Mare – Searle Crescent and Service 7 Worle – Weston-super-Mare – Haywood Village – revised timetables, with additional evening journeys added as a result of funding provided by North Somerset Council. On Service 7, the new bus stops on The Runway, at Martinet Walk and Cadet Avenue, will be fully commissioned and appear in Journey Planning and live tracking data.

Service 20 Weston-super-Mare – Burnham-on-Sea – the summer timetable will be introduced with more frequent services. The route has had minor changes between Weston-super-Mare Interchange and Weston-super-Mare railway station, with buses now serving stop B in the Interchange and therefore looping round in the opposite direction to now.
