The Chelmsford Half Marathon is taking place on Sunday 3rd March 2024.

Whilst the marathon is underway, traffic management will be enforced to ensure the safety of race participants. For the duration of the event there will be traffic short holds, temporary bus stop closures, rolling road closures and route diversions implemented. 

The road closures begin at 05:00am and are scheduled to have ended by 13:00. Please note. road closures may re-open earlier depending on how quickly the runners complete sections of the race.


Traffic short holds:

All bus services travelling in, out and around Chelmsford will be subject to traffic short holds, to allow race participants to cross the road. There will be event marshalls in place at multiple road junctions to monitor/manage/pause traffic for short intervals.

The following roads will have short traffic holds (between the hours of 08:50 and 09:15):

  • Broomfield Road
  • Parkway
  • Rainsford Road
  • Duke Street
  • Coval Lane
  • Victoria Road South
  • New London Road

Temporary bus stop suspensions:

Please note. from 05:00 to 13:00hrs the bus stops will be temporarily closed on Parkway (between New London Road and the Army and Navy roundabout).

For services travelling out of Chelmsford - bus stops will be temporarily closed and will not be served.

For services travelling into Chelmsford - bus stops will remain open.

These temporary closures only apply to bus stops located on Parkway.


Rolling road closures and planned diversions:

Due to the location of the rolling road closures all Chelmsford services will likely experience delays. To manage delays to service the following diversions will be implemented:

BUS SERVICE: TIME OF ROAD CLOSURE: PLANNED DIVERSION:
C9 Alan Cherry Drive will closed from 01/03/2024 to 00:00hrs on 03/03/2024 the C9 service will divert, in both directions, via Bishop Hall Lane, Rectory Lane and Chelmer Valley Road. Anglia Ruskin University bus stop will be served.
C8/C11 High Bridge Road will be closed between 05:00 - 11:00 towards Beaulieu -  the C8/C11 services will divert by returning back along Parkway, Victoria Road South, Victoria Road and Springfield Road (south-bound) before returning to normal line of route running back along Springfield Road.
towards Chelmsford - the C8/C11 services will divert by returning back along Springfield Road, Victoria Road and Duke Street before returning to normal line of route at Chelmsford Bus Station.
31/331/332 Essex Yeomanry Way will be closed between 05:00 - 13:00 towards Chelmsford - no diversion - to operate to normal line of route. 
towards Burnham-on-Crouch - the 31/331/332 services will divert via Baddow Road and Tabors Hill before returning to normal line of route on Maldon Road.
71/X71/371 Chelmer Village Way will be closed between 05:00 - 13:00 (between roundabouts for Mill Vue Road and Kingsford Drive) towards Colchester - no diversion - to operate to normal line of route. 
towards Chelmsford - the 71/X71/371 services will serve bus stops Barlows Reach and Brook End Road. The services will then divert by returning back along Chelmer Village Way and New Dukes Way before returning to normal line of route on Chelmer Road.
X10/X30 Essex Yeomanry Way will be closed between 05:00 - 13:00 towards Stansted Airport - no diversion - to operate to normal line of route. 
Towards Basildon/Southend-on-Sea - the X10/X30 will divert via Parkway, Rainsford Lane, Waterhouse Lane, Westway, London Road, Three Mile Hill and A12 before returning to normal line of route on Rettendon Bypass (A130).
