Commenting on the changes, Rob Hughes, Operations Director for First South Yorkshire said,

“Changing passenger behaviours mean that we’ve seen a downturn in passenger demand post-pandemic.

“We’re now carrying 24% fewer fare paying customers at peak times and 40% fewer concessionary journeys than 2019.

“There are many influences that have changed how people use public transport such as new working patterns with more people working from home.

“We therefore need to reset our network to secure a sustainable future for bus services that reflect how and when people are now travelling.

“In the spirit of transparency and partnership working, we have provided as much advance notice as possible of any proposed changes to allow time for discussion and to seek alternative arrangements.

“We have worked closely with the Combined Authority to identify the very best outcomes that make best use of support funding available within our available resources. The Bus industry, like many other sectors, continues to be affected by labour shortages and it’s important for customers that we can provide reliable services on the network we operate. The changes we’re making on 2nd October aim to reflect the need to match our resources with the new demand for our services.

“We remain committed to working together to deliver the long-term improvements needed and will continue to work closely with our transport partners to put the right measures in place now that will enable us to deliver the sustainable improvements for customers.”
