The West Yorkshire Combined Authority has closed Bradford Interchange bus station due to structural damage. During the closure services will use alternative stops in Bradford city centre. You can view a city centre map of where buses will start and end on the Metro website. Rest assured, we’re doing our best to keep you moving during the closure and we continue to work with WY Metro to minimise delays.

The rail station is open as normal, with access via the ramp footpath on Bridge Street. Rail services are not affected.

Assistance

Passengers who need assistance in Bradford City Centre can visit the Metro Travel Centre team located in Bradford Interchange rail station ticket office. The rail station entrance can be accessed via the ramp footpath on Bridge Street.

The team will be able to help with bus and pass information as well as MCard ticket sales. There is also an MCard ticketing machine for passengers who need to top up their MCards.

Bradford Interchange bus station to remain closed until September

The updated report from the Combined Authority indicates that the bus station will continue to be closed until September, as in-depth surveys are completed to determine if it can ever be safely reopened. The report said the bus station has become increasingly difficult to maintain and a decision will soon be made on its viability.

The Combined Authority has committed to continue investing in the broader Bradford Interchange site while a long-term solution is found. The council is working with the Combined Authority to support this. Plans are underway to develop an enhanced rail gateway at the Interchange train station, drawing on £22 million of funding previously set aside for Bradford Interchange improvements.

Officials from the Combined Authority and Council have reviewed a shortlist of potential sites for a temporary bus facility fit for Bradford's UK City of Culture 2025, in case the Interchange remains closed at that time.

The latest report incorporated findings from the initial survey report - ordered by the Mayor Tracy Brabin after the bus station was closed by officials on January 4 - which revealed that drainage problems had caused extensive water leakage and steelwork corrosion. The engineers concluded that further in-depth surveys are necessary before reaching a final decision.

Prioritising public safety and minimising disruption have been at the heart of the Combined Authority’s decision making throughout.

Options on the table for the future of the Interchange bus station include permanent closure, a partial reopening or full reopening. A detailed report will be presented at the Combined Authority's September meeting to determine next steps, once outcomes from the more in-depth surveys are known.

West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin said:

“We are very sorry for the disruption caused by the closure of the bus station and roadworks linked to investment in the city centre.

“We are working flat out to come to the right decision on the future of the Interchange, bearing in mind the critical importance of public safety.

“In the meantime, residents and businesses have my word that we will continue to invest in Bradford to make a great success of this magnificent city as its 2025 UK City of Culture year approaches.”
